Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
